Tribute & Message From The Family

Message From The Family

Thank you for your support during this difficult time. Please enhance this tribute to Harry by adding your memories and photos.

Harry Thomas Barnes, Sr., age 89, one of The Greatest Generation, was born in Friendsville, MD in 1921 and died January 23, 2011 in Spring Hill, FL. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in January 1941, trained as a frontline combat medic, served in Europe, the Battle of the Bulge, the Battle of St. Lo, and saw all the horror of war. He landed in Normandy days after D-Day and told of the blood red waters and of men never reaching the beach. He served honorably and well in the European theater earning a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star with Oak leaf cluster and many other citations. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to all, a man truly without guile and a man of God. He came home from war, raised his family, bought a home, lived in Baltimore for 32 years, worked in construction building homes, remodeling, a carpenter, retired in 1983 to Spring Hill, FL, where he joined a new church, made new friends, new clubs, loved fishing and gardening. He will be buried at Bushnell National Cemetery in FL.

He is survived by his devoted and adoring wife of 69 years, Virginia E. Barnes; and his loving sons and their wives, Harry T. Barnes, Jr. and Mary McDowell of E. Meredith, NY, John R. Barnes and Patricia Barnes of Westminster, MD and loving daughter and her husband, Nancy E. Rhoda and James W. Rhoda, Sr. of Spring Hill, FL and 5 grandchildren, Michelle Nemphos, Marcus Coulthard, Nicole Rosche, David Barnes and Jonathan Barnes and 7 great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service for Mr. Barnes will be held on March 10, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at Turner Funeral Homes, 14360 Spring Hill Drive, Spring Hill, FL 34609.

What a great man indeed! He has left a great example for every man to follow... to love God first and most, then His to love and care for his Wife and family so well. Harry will be missed, but seen again in the Fathers kingdom. God bless his family with comfort and hope!

I am a blessed man that had not only a wonderful father but a wonderful father-in-law as well. If a person couldn't get along with Harry than without knowing the details I would have to say that person probably had the problem. He know doubt is a an excellent measure of how a man, husband, son, friend, neighbor and especially a father-in-law should be. You will be missed Harry Barnes but I am assured to see you again because of my salvation through Jesus Christ, the one and the same that died for you and me. Jim Rhoda, Sr.

Harry will be missed by everyone who knew him----missed but never forgotten. He was a very sweet person. He and Ginny were definitely made for each other. It's nice to know that now, he is in a much better place.
Lovingly, Jo Anne

I will never forget my grandaddy. If ever I am faced with difficult choices, I'll never go wrong if I just ask myself, "what would Pops do?" We will miss you forever. I love you.
